Southern Bavaria Dream Land

From Munich we took a train (or a few) down to the little town of Füssen. We went there specifically to have a home base for touring Neuschwanstein, the fairy tale castle of “mad” King Ludwig II.

Only about a third of the interior is finished, due to the king being arrested and mysteriously dying before work was completed. And actually there were more buildings planned as well, like a chapel and a keep and a knight’s bathing terrace. To go along with the glassed-in conservatory balcony and Byzantine church-themed throne room and indoor cave complete with flowing water.

It’s a pretty crazy place, way up a rocky hill, perched over a rushing creek, designed by a theater professional and not an architect. We wished we could have seen so much more! But the tour only channels you through the finished portions and leaves the ghost-filled vacant spaces to the imagination.

But Füssen had a lot more for us! They have their own town castle with a beautiful green space above a blue blue river.

Plus a really neat nature center just across the river.

The tree-top boardwalk was pretty darned cool!

And we ended up walking to Austria!

Then off back to Würzburg. We sure had fun on our first jaunty vacation!

  1. I am so loving your updates! (And Scott wouldn’t let a few old ghosts stop him from a restoration project!)
    Love to you all!!

  2. Such a beautiful area at any time of year. I love all the colorful leaves. And you walked to Oesterreich! Are you going to redo the Durango parks when you come back and make them REALLY fun? You will be full of ideas.
